n August, Mirati Therapeutics, Inc. held its first Month of Service, an initiative to support and uplift children, families and senior citizens living in the San Diego area. In collaboration with Life Science Cares, Mirati’s Month of Service was created to encourage employees to volunteer and give back to our communities.

Life Science Cares maintains partnerships with local organizations with track records of making a change in their communities. Through their work, Life Science Cares was able to connect Mirati to four local organizations: Serving Seniors, the Ocean Discovery Institute, the Barrio Logan College Institute and the Emilio Nares Foundation.

During Month of Service, Mirati engaged both local and remote employees to positively impact members of our communities in need. Mirati team members participated in a variety of activities in support of the identified organizations. For Serving Seniors, employees teamed up to create no-sew blankets for 100 homeless senior citizens. As professionals in the life sciences industry, employees gave virtual career talks to 100 elementary and middle school students interested in STEM at the Ocean Discovery Institute, as well as provided backpacks with school supplies to incoming high school freshmen. Employees helped the Barrio Logan College Institute by donating books to their annual book festival, allowing 40 children access to free books. Lastly, employees assembled and donated snack kits to the Emilio Nares Foundation to give to 150 children undergoing chemotherapy.

At Mirati, we believe that uplifting the communities where we operate and where patients and their families live is as important as the research we conduct. As part of that belief and with the help of over 200 employees locally and across the country, Mirati reached over 230 hours of giving back in August, collectively providing assistance to over 400 individuals.

“I am proud to have contributed to Mirati’s efforts for its first Month of Service and help bring positive change to those in need,” said Laurie Stelzer, chief financial officer, Mirati Therapeutics, Inc. “Our passionate team members are deeply motivated to participate in work that is both important and unique. We strive to create a sense of belonging and inclusion – one in which we laugh and have fun as we drive change together.”

Mirati is proud to have coordinated this month-long project as part of our corporate citizenship efforts under Mirati Gives. The focus areas of Mirati Gives consist of patient and community organizations, diversity and STEM education, which align with both the mission and priorities of Mirati – to discover, design and deliver breakthrough therapies to transform the lives of patients with cancer and their loved ones, and the mission of Life Science Cares – to leverage the intellectual, financial and human capital of the life sciences industry in an effort to reduce the effects of poverty.

It is because of partners like Mirati that communities in need are supported and cared for.

“From the Life Science Cares team, I extend our sincerest thank you to Mirati for reaching out with the idea to create Month of Service. An idea turned into a display of effort and eagerness to help those impacted by poverty,” said Leane Marchese, executive director, Life Science Cares – San Diego. “It is because of partners like Mirati that communities in need are supported and cared for.”
