Job Description Summary

The Drug Discovery team at Mirati is responsible for the invention, optimization, and characterization of small molecules as clinical candidates for the Mirati research portfolio. Mirati is seeking a candidate with protein purification experience to join the Drug Discovery team at the Research Associate / Sr. Research Associate level within the Structural Biology group.

Your Responsibilities

The ideal candidate has a background in protein manipulation and crystallization. In addition, you are organized, collaborative, methodical and able to use your critical thinking skills to resolve technical issues.

  • Implement protein purification protocols on an AKTA for a wide range of protein targets that require multiple chromatography steps.
  • Execute a variety of protein manipulation protocols-e.g., buffer exchange, dialysis, concentration, biotinylation, protease cleavage.
  • Protein analysis using SDS-PAGE and HPLC methods.
  • Co-crystallize proteins using crystallographic robotic systems-e.g., Mosquito crystallization robot, Formulatrix robotic imagers-with general guidance.
  • Clearly document all procedures, experiments, and resulting data.
  • Contribute to protein purification reports and deliver data in a concise and timely manner.
  • Assist in maintaining the day-to-day operations in the protein chemistry lab and follow best practices for handling equipment. Ensure proteins are safely stored, equipment is operational, and the lab remains clean.
  • Communicate with and learn quickly from Structural Biology team members.
  • Maintain an evolving inventory of proteins, compounds, and chemicals.

What is Required

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, scientific creativity, and ability to think logically & critically.
  • Knowledge of protein chemistry protocols and subsequent analysis techniques.
  • Experience working with proteins in a research lab setting.
  • Ability to implement protocols quickly and precisely with general guidance, while developing a robust understanding and critical thinking about procedures.
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • The candidate will hold a bachelor's degree in biochemistry or a related field with a minimum of 2 years' experience in a lab setting.
  • Role is on-site at company HQ in San Diego and requires COVID-19 vaccine or weekly negative COVID-19 test results.
